The Empty Bowl

Co-founder and Vice President Kim Eckenroth, MS, APRN, FNP-C, often writes devotionals for our staff. We thought you might also appreciate them, so we created a special section on our blog to share them with you. We hope they touch your heart too.

Proverbs 3:13-15

“Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare to her.”

This morning as we were sitting by the fire and reading devotions, there was a strange clacking sound coming from the laundry room where the dogs were sleeping. Clack, scoot, clack, scoot.  Puzzled, I asked Don what that sound was coming from the laundry room. Don looked and smiled, “Bella is licking her bowl. An empty bowl.”

I got up and went to fix their usual breakfast, dry food with freshly cooked chicken and broth. The photo is Bella at the end of her feast. A happy puppy with a fully tummy.

You know, some days my life parallels my dogs. Getting up and rushing about the day, no time for devotions or looking at my prayer list for others. Only saying a quick prayer as I run out my door and hop into the car. You know on those days, my life with the Lord is like eating crumbs, the remnant dust from yesterday. It is like sitting by an empty bowl, not taking the time to fill my life with heavenly thoughts and courage for the day. Instead of a feast filling my soul in contemplation of what God has, it is like carrying Bella’s empty bowl. I need more than the aroma of the good things from yesterday. I need the strength to face whatever is ahead in life today.

Prayer:

” Lord, we thank you as the Creator of us all and for the gift of life this new day brings. Thank you for your love and tender watch and care over our lives last night. In surrendering our minds, our hearts, our time our life to you, we ask you to fill us with your wisdom to do your will. We ask for the Holy Spirit to guide each of us on our journey as we minister to each other and those committed to our care, especially in our own home. It is in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”

Blessings over you guys and angels around you.
